The South Bend Tribune reports that musician Katie Ernst has set some of Dorothy Parker’s poetry to music.
Ernst, who is both a composer and bassist, has initiated a project called “Little Words” using Parker’s poetry as lyrics. The music is jazz inspired and on Friday July 31st, Ernst will perform the project live at Merrimans’ Playhouse in South Bend. The performance will include the other members of Ernst’s band Twin Talk, a Chicago-based group. The members include a saxophonist named Dustin Laurenzi and a drummer named Andrew Green. Pianist Stu Mindeman will also join the group for Friday’s event.
Parker’s poetry is particularly suited to music, according to South Bend Tribune reporter Jack Walton. “The poetry makes the transition to song lyric so gracefully that someone unfamiliar with the Parker poem would never guess that the words were borrowed,” he writes. The song to which he refers is called “A Very Short Song,” and it made its public debut on Twin Talk’s first album, which is called “Sightline.”
Friday’s performance will begin at 8pm and costs $13 at the door.
